Notes from the road, living in an Airstream with two cats and a cocktail shaker.

Losing our dear Sadie

Sadie the cat crosses her front legs and looks away

We’d just adopted kittens Frankie & Willow and were not looking for a 3rd. Except for Anne who feels 5 is maybe, possibly just enough. We first met Sadie during a shelter event at a local brewery. She was pretty thin and frankly looking a bit worn from nursing her first litter and it was love at first sight.

Those of you questioning how alcohol might’ve factored into bringing Sadie home with us could be forgiven, but there was no way we were leaving without the opportunity to properly challenge our cordless vacuum from all the hair.

From Day 1, Sadie slept beside Anne’s head every night and was often found spread across her legs while she read in bed. And when Anne came down with Covid, Sadie never left her side during her entire recovery.

Noticing a trend? She attached herself to Anne and didn’t let go.

Until she did.

We had just checked into our new campsite near Black Hawk, Colorado in the pouring rain. Seeking to shelter the cats while transporting them from Carl to Ellie, we held them under our jackets during the walk. Sadie was having none of it, bared her claws, and dropped to the ground, where she immediate ran off to seek her own shelter. Even though the Airstream, her home, was mere steps away.

Sadly, after days (and many return visits) of fruitless searching, we’re unlikely to ever know what happened. We can only pray she’s in a warm loving home and being spoiled rotten. We will love and miss you always, sweet Sadie.
